Oh, I’m fancy, huh?

Or Macbook Air. Whatever it’s called.

I spent a bunch of much money this weekend. I bought this laptop, a warranty, a mouse, Apple TV, a suitcase, and sneakers. Almost $2,500. But 99% of that is on a credit card, so I’m not really thinking about it.

This is the first computer I’ve ever bought on my own. Isn’t that crazy? My first computer, a big old desktop back in 1995, was a hand-me-down from my uncle. Five years later, my friend Rob gave me a laptop that had “fallen off a truck” (his truck – he was a delivery man). He’d thought he was getting me a new one, but it had turned out to be used. Sigh. Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers, right?

I used that laptop for several years. In 2004, Jeffrey (ex husband) and I finally got a new desktop. It was a Compaq, nothing too fancy. Between games and downloading music and getting viruses we quickly slowed that one up. In 2007, I got a laptop from my job – they were upgrading their computers, so they raffled off about 50 old laptops. I was one of the lucky winners.

When I moved out of our house in 2009, I let Jeffrey keep the computer. He needed it for work, and by that time it was slow as fuck anyway. Just like my prior two computers. I really know how to run a computer into the ground.

After that I went about two years without having a computer. No big deal, really, because I have one at work. Then one day last year Jeffrey called me and told me that one of his clients had gotten rid of three IBM Think Pads, did I want one? Of course I did!

Once again I was the proud owner of an outdated laptop. I didn’t care though, because it got the job done. I was using it right up until yesterday, despite the fact that the wifi connection wasn’t that good and the mouse would occasionally get stuck.

I definitely didn’t need a new laptop. What really spurred this purchase was my upcoming trip to Europe. I want to blog at least a little bit while I’m there, and the thought of dealing with the WordPress phone app the way I did when I was in Seattle was NOT appealing. Of course, I wouldn’t buy a computer simply for my two-week vacation. That would be ridiculous. But I realized that if I bought a really good laptop then in addition to blogging in Europe, I could also edit my photos at home instead of being tied to my work computer. It would make blogging a whole lot easier. A justifiable purchase for sure.
